Volunteer at San Jose Playhouse

Volunteers

You’re invited to join the dozens of individuals who share a common interest in theatre and a desire to contribute to San Jose Playhouse and the community by becoming a volunteer. Our volunteers’ varied interests and skills provide the expertise and enthusiasm required for almost any project.

Generally, volunteer’s efforts fall into four categories:

  • Ushers are active evenings and weekends. In addition to our cafe staff, they are who our guests meet first when attending San Jose Playhouse performances at 3Below Theaters.
  • Our Community Engagement Volunteers are part of almost all of San Jose Playhouse’s events, from opening night parties to annual fundraisers.
  • Administrative and Marketing Volunteers help out on a consistent weekly or monthly schedule. They are truly an invaluable resource to our company and receive insider perks for their dedicated efforts.
  • Engaging in fundraising events and activities.

Benefits of Volunteering

Active volunteers are invited to the final dress rehearsal for every San Jose Playhouse production. They receive advance email notification of publicly advertised discounts and special events, and they attend an annual “Thank You” party held in their honor. Those who usher also get to see that evening’s show for free and enjoy other perks listed below.

How It Works

We have an ever-changing flow of volunteer opportunities. We notify our active volunteers by email as these opportunities arise. You can choose to participate according to your interest and availability.

We will always welcome enthusiastic and friendly theatre-lovers to join our volunteer team. Individuals with a pleasant manner, enthusiasm, a willingness to follow instruction, and plenty of commitment are invited to serve as stewards to ensure audience comfort and support the tireless efforts of our staff to create great entertainment.

Volunteer stewards are asked to commit to at least two shifts per calendar month for at least six months. Shifts vary from afternoon, evening, and weekend and you are free to choose your own shifts. We provide front of house training and ongoing support.

Front of House Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Perform a vital role as the public face of San Jose Playhouse during our performances and special events ensuring that our patrons have a positive, enjoyable and safe experience.

  • Provide a high level of customer service

  • Make sure that inside and outside patio dining areas are kept presentable for guests
  • Check tickets and show patrons to their seats

  • Hand out programs

  • Clear and tidy the auditorium after the performance

  • Ensure that all audience members comply with San Jose Playhouse’s specific rules and regulations

  • Deal with audience related inquiries and problems

  • Understand and carry out the evacuation procedure if necessary

In return, volunteers receive the following perks:

  • Watch our productions and special events free when serving as an usher

  • One free small popcorn

  • Make new friends

  • Learn new skills

  • Give something back to your community

  • Be part of our story
